What is ergonomic or active sitting?

A stool or active balance stool is an ergonomic piece of furniture that, through its design, promotes more active sitting. This leads to the user both increasing blood circulation and strengthening the muscles. The advantage of active sitting is that the risk of pain is significantly reduced compared to sitting statically for a longer period. There are three different types of these chairs that require varying degrees of active sitting:

• Poufs
  These stools are designed in fabric and have a solid shape. They are available in both more stable models with a flat bottom as well as rounded bottoms to activate the user.
• Balance pallets
  A regular stool with a rounded bottom that requires the user to activate more muscles to stabilize the stool as it is designed to tilt easily.
• Fixed pallets
  A "normal stool" with the option of raising and lowering as well as 360 degree rotation. This stool only requires a basic level of balance and stabilization.

The point of stools
Using a stool, especially a balance stool, forces the user to use their muscles and also to angle their back into an ergonomic position. Even if this piece of furniture is not used all day, using this alternative seating furniture makes a huge difference to the stimulation of muscles around the back, legs and secondarily almost the entire body. Many feel that this gives extra focus when using a stool as there are no distractions such as armrests or backrests.

Use in an office environment
Use of these stools varies depending on the business they are in. A tip might be to place them as secondary and or temporary furniture. This can be dining rooms, lounges, as a guest chair or in meeting rooms. This enables a useful variation for the occasions where the chair is used for a shorter time. For long work shifts that require high concentration, the vast majority most likely prefer a more traditional office chair.
